About the Artists:

JOHN COLLINGE (originally from New Haven, CT) graduated from New York City’s New School University in 2011 with a BFA in music performance (saxophone) and a BA in history. His teachers include Reggie Workman, Barry Harris, Jane Ira Bloom, Walt Weiskopf, George Cables, Tim Price, Rachel Z, Gil Goldstein and Jim Snidero. After college he worked in New York’s music industry for Boosey and Hawkes and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), eventually rising to the position of Senior Account Executive for the Broadcast Licensing department, while continuing his career as a musician performing throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Marriage in 2018 brought John Collinge to his wife’s city of Belem, Brazil where his music career flourished. In Belem, he passed a public entrance exam to become a professor of saxophone at Belem’s renowned Carlos Gomes Conservatory and was selected to play alto saxophone in the state jazz orchestra, “Amazonia Jazz Band”, performing regularly at Belem’s historic Teatro da Paz and touring Brazil and many parts of South America, sharing the stage with many famous Brazilian musicians. Having recently returned to the US with his family, John has settled down in South Florida where his day job is hiring musicians for the Royal Caribbean fleet and he has quickly become one of the region’s first-call jazz saxophonists.

DEREK SIMS is an in-demand trumpeter, pianist and educator, in the South Florida music scene. Mr. Sims has had the privilege of performing with such artists as Benny Golson, John Pattitucci, Freda Payne, Danilo Perez, Gerald Wilson, Arturo Sandoval, Bob Mintzer, Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis, Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Bobby Watson, Pancho Sanchez, Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Ron Miles, Martha Reeves, and many others. While living in Portland, OR Mr. Sims judged at the many jazz festivals in the Pacific Northwest area. He was on the faculty of the Mel Brown Jazz Camp from 2003-2017. Concurrently, Mr. Sims was the Director of Jazz at the Metropolitan Youth Symphony from 2004-2015. He also was an Adjunct Professor of Jazz Trumpet and the Jazz Band Director at Portland State University from 2013-2018. After these two stints Mr. Sims started PJAZZ (The Portland Jazz School), and coached jazz combos from 2018-2021. After moving to South Florida in 2022, Mr. Sims maintains a private studio of jazz improv students and is working as a jazz director at the Coral Springs Charter School, and a music coach at the Somerset Silver Palms Charter School.
